Did you notice any of your Amazon statement’s containing the term ‘Amazon courtesy credit’? Do you wonder what it is?

As you all know, I am a massive fan of the Amazon platform.

In the past few years, I have spent a lot of time analyzing and studying it to understand better how it works and what kind of features and benefits they offer.

I also worked hard to figure out how to show you better these benefits and how you can use them.

That’s why I have been working on a series of posts regarding Amazon. So far, I have covered quite a bit of different topics.

The ones that caught the most attention are guides related to finding an Amazon wish list and editing Amazon reviews

What Is An Amazon Courtesy Credit?

Amazon courtesy credit is an Amazon special issued by the platform to mitigate damages or reward specific actions. You can even get it after you file particular complaints.

It’s often confused with a gift card balance or promo codes.

It’s a different thing, as Amazon courtesy credit is being given for delivery delays that happen or to rectify Amazon’s mistakes (like Amazon delivering packages to the wrong address).

How Amazon decides to give courtesy credit is totally up to their internal policy and discretion, and it’s tough (and not recommended) to abuse it.

Courtesy Credit Meaning

In plain terms, a courtesy credit is a small dollar amount that Amazon adds to your account as a goodwill gesture.

The word “courtesy” signals that the credit is discretionary - Amazon is not legally obligated to issue it.

You may also see it referred to as an “Amazon inconvenience credit” or “promotional credit” in some email notifications. Regardless of the label, it works the same way: the balance is applied automatically at checkout on qualifying purchases.

Amazon Courtesy Credit vs. Gift Card vs. Promo Code

Shoppers often mix these three up. Here is how they differ:

What To Use Amazon Courtesy Credit For?

You can use Amazon courtesy credit for purchasing any Amazon product. There have been certain complaints that those credits went missing after they haven’t been used for a longer period.

Those concerns were low in number, so they didn’t present a significant issue, but if you want to be on the safe side, you could  spend those credits as fast as possible.

Why Did I Get an Amazon Courtesy Credit?

Amazon typically grants a credit when it wants to make things right:

  • Late Amazon delivery or lost shipment

  • Delivery to the wrong address

  • Partial refunds for damaged items or empty Amazon packages

  • Service outages (e.g., Prime Video glitch)

  • Proactive goodwill after a chat with customer service

  • A credit that was supposed to apply automatically but didn’t process correctly

  • Choosing No-Rush Shipping on a Prime order (sometimes labeled as a digital reward rather than a courtesy credit)

If none of these apply, it may have come from a limited-time marketing promo—the subject line usually reads “Thanks for being a Prime member – here’s a credit.”

How Much Is a Typical Courtesy Credit?

The amount varies depending on what went wrong. Based on reports from Amazon shoppers, here are the most common ranges:

  • No-Rush Shipping reward: $1 to $3 (often as a digital credit for eBooks, music, or apps)

  • Late delivery or processing delay: $5 to $10

  • Lost or significantly damaged package: $10 to $20+

  • Customer service escalation: $5 to $25, depending on the severity of the issue

Amazon does not publish a fixed schedule. The representative handling your case has discretion, and the amount is influenced by your order history, the value of the affected item, and the nature of the problem.

How to Get an Amazon Courtesy Credit?

There are a couple of different ways to obtain an Amazon courtesy credit that I have used, so let’s cover them.

Slow Shipping Method

If you are an Amazon Prime user, there’s a way to get amazon courtesy credit by choosing a slow shipping method.

Being an Amazon Prime user, you get an option of free one day or two day shipping, however, when checking out, you also get an option of choosing a several-day long shipping.

It is called Free No-Rush Shipping

By choosing this option, you can sometimes be credited with an Amazon courtesy credit.

Be aware that this option is not guaranteed, and you can often only get about $1.50 in a digital reward that you can use to purchase digital products like books, music, videos, etc.

These offers have expiration dates, so you must use them in a timeframe provided by Amazon.

Tip: Amazon labels the delay option “FREE No-Rush Shipping,” and the reward appears automatically in your account once the order ships.

Filing a Dispute

Another and more common way to get Amazon courtesy credit is by filing a dispute.

Of course, this shouldn’t be abused, and disputes should be only filed when there’s something wrong with your order.

If your order is late on time or you have never even received the package, you can open a dispute.

In these cases, Amazon will often offer a courtesy credit to “repair the relationship” because of the mistake on their end.

These credits can be anywhere from $1 to $20+, and you will get an email notifying you of it.

How to Contact Amazon About a Courtesy Credit

If you believe you’re entitled to a courtesy credit but haven’t received one, here’s how to reach Amazon’s support team:

  1. Go to amazon.com/contact-us or open the Amazon app and tap “Customer Service.”

  2. Select the order in question, then choose “Something else” when prompted for the issue type.

  3. Pick “Chat” or “Phone”. In the chat, explain the problem clearly—mention late delivery, wrong item, or whatever the issue is.

  4. Politely ask whether Amazon can issue a courtesy credit for the inconvenience. Representatives have the authority to add one to your account in real time.

For general questions about contacting sellers on Amazon (which is different from contacting Amazon directly), we have a separate guide.

How to Use Amazon Courtesy Credit?

Be aware that you will be able to use Amazon courtesy credit to make purchases for products that are fulfilled and sold by Amazon.

This does not include third-party sellers on Amazon.

On each product listing, you can find information about who is selling and fulfilling the products, and each of these needs to say Amazon.

Amazon applies the credit automatically at checkout; you’ll see it listed in the Order Summary box.

You can see those credits being applied at every purchase breakdown and shipping and all the other fees.

If you choose to not use a courtesy credit in any instance, you can deselect it manually when choosing a payment option.

How Does Amazon Courtesy Credit Work? (Step by Step)

Once a credit is on your account, the checkout process is automatic:

  1. Add an item that is sold and shipped by Amazon to your cart.

  2. Proceed to checkout. On the payment page, your courtesy credit balance appears under “Order Summary.”

  3. Amazon deducts the credit before charging your default payment method.

  4. If the credit doesn’t cover the full order, the remaining balance goes to your card. If it more than covers the order, the leftover stays in your account for next time.

What To Do If You Have Questions About Using a Courtesy Credit

If you're unsure how your courtesy credit works or you're having trouble finding it, there are a few steps you can take to get more clarity:

  • Check Your Email - Whenever you're issued a courtesy credit, Amazon will send you an email that details how and where the credit can be applied. Double-check your inbox (and your spam folder, just in case) for any recent messages from Amazon about account credits.

  • Review the Fine Print - Credits usually only work for items sold and shipped by Amazon, not third-party sellers. Make sure you’re shopping products where your credit can actually be used. This info appears under the product price or within the "Sold by" section on the listing.

  • Check Other Account Balances - Sometimes, your credit might be bundled under your digital rewards or gift card balance. Head over to your account’s “Rewards & Credits” section to track it down.

Still Stuck? If something isn’t adding up, or your courtesy credit isn’t appearing at checkout, don’t hesitate to contact Amazon support.

Their chat and phone support can dig into your account specifics and help resolve issues in real time.

By following these steps, you should be able to track down your credit and confidently put it to use on your next Amazon shopping spree.

How to Check Your Amazon Courtesy Credit?

If you are looking to check out your courtesy credit balance, you will be able to find that information when you go to Digital Credit Balance page.

Go to Account → Your Payments → Rewards & Credits.

  • Look for a line called “Courtesy Credit” in the balance tab.

  • If you don’t see the category, your balance is currently $0.

If a category for Amazon courtesy credit is missing, that means you don’t have any.

Alternative Way to Check Your Balance

Amazon’s credit and promotional balance pages can be confusing because they are spread across different sections. If the Rewards & Credits page doesn’t show anything, try this alternative method:

  1. Add a qualifying item (sold and shipped by Amazon) to your cart.

  2. Proceed all the way to the final checkout page (but don’t place the order).

  3. On the Order Summary, any active courtesy credit will appear as a line-item deduction. This is the most reliable way to confirm whether you have a balance.

What is Amazon Prime Courtesy Credit?

amazon prime courtesy credit

I often get asked this question. There’s no difference between regular Amazon courtesy credit and Amazon Prime courtesy credit.

The only difference is in what we have already explained. That is how you can obtain courtesy credit, where Amazon Prime users can do it by delaying shipping and giving Amazon extra breathing room in fulfilling all orders.

Prime members may also see courtesy credits after service disruptions with Prime benefits such as Prime Video streaming issues, delayed Prime Day deliveries, or problems with Amazon Prime Video payment settings. These credits function identically to standard courtesy credits and follow the same eligibility and expiry rules.

Does Amazon Courtesy Credit Expire?

According to Amazon’s official promotional terms, credit activity data is only available for 365 days in your account. After that, old records drop off even if the credit itself was already used. If you think a credit expired before you could use it, contact Amazon support - some representatives can re-issue an expired credit as a one-time exception.

Why Did I Get an Amazon Courtesy Credit?

Amazon typically grants a credit when it wants to make things right:

  • Late Amazon delivery or lost shipment

  • Delivery to the wrong address

  • Partial refunds for damaged items or empty Amazon packages

  • Service outages (e.g., Prime Video glitch)

  • Proactive goodwill after a chat with customer service

If none of these apply, it may have come from a limited-time marketing promo - the subject line usually reads “Thanks for being a Prime member – here’s a credit.”

What Can You Buy with Amazon Courtesy Credit?

✔ Eligible

✖ Not Eligible

Physical items sold & fulfilled by Amazon

Third-party (Marketplace) sellers

Amazon devices (Echo, Kindle, Fire TV)

Gift cards

Amazon Fresh & Whole Foods orders

Prime membership fees

Subscribe-&-Save shipments

Digital subscriptions (e.g., Kindle Unlimited)

Tip: If you have a small courtesy credit (under $3) and don’t want it to go to waste, digital purchases like eBooks or movie rentals are a great way to use it up quickly. You can also combine it with Amazon gift cards on a qualifying order for more purchasing flexibility.

Will You Get Courtesy Credit If a Shipment Is Lost?

It’s unlikely that will happen. Amazon’s policy for deliveries to wrong address is to reship the item to the correct address.

If that doesn’t correlate well with your timing, you can always go and request a cancellation immediately.

You can also wait for your product to arrive, and then return it and ask for your money back.

Amazon will gladly offer a refund, and you’ll get your money back.

Can Courtesy Credit Be Combined with Other Payment Methods?

Yes. At checkout Amazon applies balances in this order:

  1. Courtesy / promotional credits

  2. Gift-card balance

  3. Any remaining amount charged to your chosen payment method

You can un-tick a credit under “Payment Method → Change” if you’d rather save it for later

How to View Your Courtesy Credit Balance

Courtesy credits and promotional credits can be tricky to track - they don’t appear in your main account balance like gift cards do.

To see your available credits, head to the Amazon Music Credits page (oddly enough, this is where Amazon lists promo balances for all product categories).

Click “Check your Balance” to view your total.

Note: This balance is not cumulative per credit type; the displayed total shows your combined available courtesy and promotional credits.

What to Remember About Credits

  • Courtesy credits only apply to items sold and fulfilled by Amazon, as well as select digital purchases.

  • The system automatically uses eligible credits first on your next qualifying order.

  • If you don’t want to use a credit right away, you can opt out at checkout by editing your payment method.

This way, you can keep track and maximize your benefits when shopping.

My Courtesy Credit Disappeared—What Happened?

  • It expired (see above).

  • You used it on a digital pre-order - the credit was consumed the moment the pre-order shipped.

  • You changed your country marketplace; credits don’t transfer across regions.

  • The credit migrated into a Subscribe-&-Save shipment; check the latest subscription invoice.

  • The credit was automatically applied to a small order you forgot about—check your recent Order Summary sections in Your Orders to confirm.

Is Courtesy Credit Refundable if You Return or Cancel?

Once an order ships, the courtesy credit is consumed.

If you return the item, Amazon re-issues an equivalent promotional credit - not cash—to your balance. For more on standard return timelines, see our Amazon return policy guide.

Amazon Courtesy Credit FAQ

Can I transfer my courtesy credit to another Amazon account?

No. Courtesy credits are tied to the specific Amazon account they were issued to. They cannot be transferred, gifted, or redeemed on a different account.

Does Amazon courtesy credit work on Subscribe & Save orders?

Yes, as long as the Subscribe & Save item is sold and shipped directly by Amazon. The credit will be applied on the next qualifying subscription shipment. Be aware that once applied, the credit is consumed for that single shipment and won’t carry over to future subscription deliveries.

Can I use courtesy credit to buy Amazon gift cards?

No. Amazon explicitly excludes gift card purchases from courtesy and promotional credit eligibility. This also applies to Prime membership fees and sales tax.

I received a courtesy credit email - is it a scam?

Legitimate Amazon courtesy credit emails come from an @amazon.com address and never ask you to click a link to “claim” your credit—the balance is added automatically. If an email asks you to enter payment details or log in through an unfamiliar URL, it’s likely a phishing attempt. When in doubt, log into your Amazon account directly and check your credit balance from there.

Can I use courtesy credit on Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods?

In most cases, yes. Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods orders that are fulfilled by Amazon qualify for courtesy credit. However, specific product exclusions may apply depending on your region and the terms attached to your specific credit.

Bottom Line

We have come down to the end of this article.

I hope you now have a better understanding of Amazon courtesy credit, how to check it and how to use it in the future.
